Irrigation Requirements and Water Supplies

Sources of Data

There are several studies which include estimates of irrigation require-
ments in the general vicinity of the Florida project. Among these studies
are: (1) Appendix B of the Record of the Upper Colorado River Basin Compact
Commission; (2) ConstUllptive Use and Irrigation Water Requirements of Crops
in Colorado, by Harry F. Blaney and Wayne D. Criddle; and 0) ConstUllptive
Use of Water in the Irrigated Areas of the Upper Colorado River Basin, by
Blaney and Criddle. Addi tional related information is contained in the
Water Supply Papers of the U.S. Geological Survey, Climatological Data by
the U.S. Weather Bureau, Colorado Heat and Moisture Indexes for Use in
Land Capability Classification by the Soil Conservation Service, and other
publications. These and other available related reports were carefully
reviewed for the purpose of this study. In addi tion, information was
supplied by techni cians of the Colorado State Universi ty, Colorado Agri-
cultural Experiment Station, Colorado Cooperative Extension Service, Colorado
State Engineer, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation,
U.S. Soil Cbnservation Service, and others familiar with the area.

Analysis of Data

ConstUllptive use requirements for the principal crops in the area were
estimated by the Blaney-Criddle procedures (table 4). The various irriga-
tion water losses expected wi thin the project were estimated by considering
soil characteristics and site locations. Total farm water requirements were
estimated by adding on-farm losses to the basic constUllptive use estimates
weighted by projected crop acreage distribution (table 5).

Table 4. - Estimate of constUllptive use requirements for major crops,
Florida project

.
.

Alfalfa

Pasture Corn

SIlall
grain

: :

Frost-free period
Consumpti ve use coeffi cient .85 .75 .75 .75
Consumptive use factor 22.74 22.74 22.74 19.04
ConstUllptive use, ac. ins./ac. 19.32 17.05 17.05 14.28
Nonfrost-free period
Consumptive use coefficient .70 .60 ----- -----
Consumptive use factor 8.44 8.44 ----- -----
Consumptive use, ac. ins./ac. 5.90 5.06 ----- -----
Total constUllptive use, ac. ins./ac. 25.22 22.11 17.05 14.28
Effective seasonal precipitation, ins. 5.88 5.88 4.30 3.38
Net constUllpti ve use requirements, ac.
ins./ac. 19.34 16.23 12.75 10.90
- 13 -
