Close to 1,SOO speoies of plants are

found in the California Desert. About 120 of these are on

Rare, Threatened, or Endangered lists.

About 500 species of invertabrates are found in the California

Desert, at least part of the year. About 15 speoies have been

identified as being on Rare or Endangered lists.

As more is leared about vegetation and wildlife, the importance

of protecting the fragile desert habitat has become more olear.

Protection of scenic quality and preservation of wilderness
areas has become an issue in the California Desert.

Prehistorio man lived throughout the des.ert and ,his si,gns ',are

often found. Only 10% of the desert has been surveyed, but

it is estimated that over 100,000 sites are located in the

California Desert.

Historio signs of man are also of great interest to many.

These landmarks, both historic and prehistorio are something

that many wish to preserve.

Considering these uses and values found in the California

Oesert, it becomes quite understandable that there are many

conflioting opinions regarding the best way to manage these

lands for mans use today and for the future.

The inoreased popularity of ORV in reoent years has caused

muoh controversy. Publio conoern both pro and con resulted

in an awareness that publio lands needed more effective

planning and management.
c-12
