Alternative in Column 3 - The alternative shown in this column is similar

to the one in Column 2, in that Animas River water would be stored in

Ridges Basin Reservoir and Southern Ute Reservoir. About 65 percent of

the power required would be produced by the Animas Powerplant in this plan

also. The only difference is that La Plata River water would be stored

in Parrott Reservoir instead of Hay Gulch Reservoir. All project lands

would be sprinkler irrigated. The map on the following page shows this

plan.

By using Parrott Reservoir the 6,000 acres above Ridges Basin Canal

would receive a full ~ater supply throughout the irrigation season. The

owners of this land have the earliest priorities and largest flow rights

on the La Plata River; therefore, these people would have little reason

to participate in the project unless they received a full water supply.

If they do not participate in the project, they would continue to over

irrigate during spring runoff. The project, however, could store this

water and distribute it out over more acres during the irrigation season.

Without these landowners participation, more project water would have

to be pumped from the Animas River.

"
