~.

ANI~~S - LA PLATA PROJECT
Alternatives

The attached table arrays four alternatives; one of which has 55,000

acre-feet of Municipal and Industrial (M&I) water for the Southern Ute

Tribe and three that have 20,000 AF of M&I water. Each of the four

alternatives utilize the Animas Power Plant, the Durango Pumping Plant

and Ridges Basin Reservoir. The following paragraphs describe the

alternatives arrayed in the table:

Alternative in Column I - This alternative was the last one reMiewea by

the Advisory Team. Generally this alternate stores Animas River water

in Ridges Basin Reservoir via the Durango Pumping Plant and in Southern

Ute Reservoir via the Lower Animas Canal. La Plata River water is

stored in Hay Gulch Reservoir via the La Plata Diversion Canal. The

Animas Power Plant produces about 65 percent of the project power require-

ments. The map on the page after next shows the project features and the

lands. This alternative is the only one of the four that has 55,000

acre-feet of M&I water for the Southern Ute Indian tribe. All project

lands are sprinkler irrigated except the 6,000 acres north of Ridges Basin

Canal. These 6,000 acres do not receive a full supply of water during the

late summer months with this plan.

Alternative in Column 2 - This alternative, with one exception, is

exactly the same as the previous one. The Southern Ute Indian Tribe would

receive 20,000 acre-feet of M&I water instead of 55,000 acre-feet. Reasons

for this change are detailed in an accompanying statement. This change
