1

.. 0011U

INTRODUCTION

The basic objective of the study was to plan for the best use of water and related
land resources to meet projected needs to the year 2020. (Illustration 1) Using 1965
as a base year, projections of future demands for food and fiber were made for the
entire United States by the Office of Business Economics and the Economic Re.
search Service. These national projections were then broken down and allocated to
each of 18 Water Resource Regions in the United States. The reader must under-
stand that these projections are only one set of many possible. Furthermore, the
plan presented is only one method of meeting the needs of this particular set of
projections. This consideration is important when the plan is compared to those
formulated by other groups, agencies or states.

OBJECTIVES

THE BASIC OBJECTIVE - TO PROVIDE THE BEST USE OR
COMBINATION OF USES OF WATER AND RELATED
LAND RESOURCES TO MEET ALL FORESEEABLE NEEDS
PROJECTED TO YEAR 2020 WITH FULL CONSIDERATIONS TO
- ,
DEVELOPMENT PRESERVATION WEll BEING OF PEOPLE
ECONOMIC OEVELOPMENT UNlUUE NATURAL BEAUTY THE OVERRIDING
WATER STORAGE FACILITIES HISTORlCAllNTEREST DETERMINANT IN
HYDROElECTRIC POWER SCIENTIFIC INTEREST CONSIDERING THE
FLOOD CONTROL MEASURES UNCROWDED LAND BEST USE OF
LAND STABILIZATION MEASURES MAINTAIN AND ENHANCE WATER AND
LAND DRAINAGE MEASURES ENVIRONMENTAL DUALITY RELATED LAND
WATERSHEO PROTECTION RESOURCES.
RECREATION FACILITIES AVOID RESOURCE
FISH AND WilDLIFE AND DEVELOPMENT
WATER QUALITY MEASURES USE FOR THE
HEAL TH PROTECTION MEASURES BENEFIT OF A FEW

Illustration 1
