Fish and wildlife developments generally require that areas be kept essentially in
their natural state or restored to that condition. Consequently the resource remains
essentially constant while the demand increases sharply. The relationship between
demand and capacity for hunting and fishing in 1965 and projected to 2020 is
shown in illustration 23.
The preservation and rehabilitation of rangelands and wetlands adaptable for
game and waterfowl habitat are essential to meet the demands; as hunting pressures
increase, more stringent controls must be exercised. Sport hunting programs include
land acquisition and development, access roads and habitat management. Planned
storage facilities suitable for fisheries will be utilized. Minimum streamflows required
to support a fishery should be restored and maintained. In some instances releases
from storage would be required for this purpose.
Electric power requirements will be met by developing most of the region's
sources of energy. Large iml>orts of power will still be required. (Illustration 24.)
The water quality and pollution control programs projected for the region would
maintain and/or enhance the quality of the water through the year 2020. One of the
major programs is the proper treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, Ii,
lustration 25 shows the present and projected untreated waste loads from these uses
in terms of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).

3.000
'"
"
z
;)i
::>
o
J:
I-
~ 2,000
'"
>
Cl
a:
w
I-
Z
::>
J: 1,000

HUNTING AND FISHING PROJECTIONS

4,000

Illustration 23

24

4,000

3,000 ~
z
<!
'"
::>
o
J:
l-
i!:
2,000 ~
<!
"
z
<!
:;;
a:
w
J:
'"
1,000 u:
