RESOURCE AVAILABILITY

LAND RESOURCES

The Great Basin Region encompasses 85,717,000 acres of land area and
1,744,000 acres of water area. It is characterized by parallel mountain ranges sepa.
rated by broad desert basins and interior drainage. The topography varies from steep
mountains, with elevations up to 13,000 feet, to flat valleys with elevations as low as
3,000 feet.
Over 70 percent of the total land area is administered by the federal government.
The Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service and Department of Defense, are
the primary land administering agencies. There are more than 19 million acres of
private land scattered throughout the region, located generally in fertile valleys
where water exists.
Only small acreages are intensively used. Most of the region's land still resembles
its original undeveloped condition. About 74 percent of the land is used for grazing
livestock. All lands except the barren salt flats are valuable watersheds, one of the
most important uses for land in this arid region.

Watershed

Desert Range

10
