0015H

PROJECT TITLE: Determination of Evaporation and Thermal Regime of Selected
Reservoirs and Lakes (fig. 16)

COOPERATING AGENCY: City and County of Denver, Board of Water Commissioners

PROJECT CHIEF: Norman E. Spahr, District Office, lakewood

PERIOD OF PROJECT: May 1972 through May 1982

Problem.--The Denver Board of Water Commissioners operates one of the Na-
tion's most complex water-collection, storage, and distribution systems. Water is
stored in seven reservoirs on both sides of the Continental Divide for eventual
use in the Denver metropolitan area. As part of its water-rights appropriation,
the Board of Water Commissioners is required to account for water loss by evapo-
ration from the reservoirs. The Board of Water Commissioners needs to know the
volume of water being evaporated.

Objectives.--Determine total annual evaporation and seasonal and annual var-
iations in evaporation from each reservoir. Determine the effects of altitude,
wind shelter, and reservoir operation on evaporation. Study methods for improving
relation between pan and reservoir evaporation.

Approach.--Review all
pan-evaporation equipment at
all reservoirs.

exi st ing data.
all reservo i rs.

Install and operate mass-transfer and
Conduct energy-budget analyses at

Progress.--Annual volumes of water being evaporated have been determined for
all reservoirs using mass-transfer and pan-evaporation techniques. Energy-budget
analyses have been completed for all reservoirs except the Williams Fork Reser-,
voir. Energy-budget data have been collected at the Williams Fork Reservoir.
A cl imatic study in South Park has been completed.

Plans.--Complete data collection in December 1980. Prepare a report covering
data collection from 1974 to 1980.

41
