)

HIGHLIGHTS OF 1972 OPERATION

Carryover storage reserves in all areas were well above normal
at the beginning of the water year.

Winter precipitation was generally normal or better in all areas
except the eastern slope of Colorado.

The spring was warm with subnormal precipitation and above normal
reservoir inflows until early April.

There were extensive operational planning and coordination efforts
relative to the movement of surplus waters on the North Platte
River System.

Cool weather and subnormal inflows generally occurred from early
April until late May.

Boysen Reservoir drawdown was limited to enhance spring fish
spawning, with an accompaning loss in power revenue of over $5,000.

Excess waters on the North Platte River System were temporarily
stored in May to assist in repairs at Kingsley Dam, which resulted
in considerable bypass.of Fremont Canyon Powerplant.

Surplus water on the North Platte River System was successfUlly
stored and moved to Nebraska as a result of forecasts and opera-
.tional planning.

Reservoir inflows peaked and receded sharply early in June following
a period of rapid warmup.

April-July snowmelt runoff was generally normal or less throughout
the system except at Boysen Reservoir.

Boysen Reservoir filled and spilled in June with above-normal run-
off; carryover storage was normal.

Lake Granby filled to 98 percent of capacity (530,000 acre-feet)
in July according to plan, with normal pumping from Willow Creek.

Seminoe Reservoir filled to 95 percent of capacity (950,000 acre-
feet) in July according to plan and without spill.

Buffalo Bill Reservoir filled with spill early in July; carryover
storage was above normal.

1
