I
I
I

July 1976

SUMMARY SHEETS
Dallas Creek Project

LOCATION

The Dallas Creek Project is located in west-central Colorado in the Un-
compahgre River Basin of the Upper Colorado River Basin.

PURPOSE

Unused flows of the Uncompahgre River would be developed for municipal and
industrial use and for irrigation. Benefits would also be provided to re-
creation, fisheries, and flood control.

STATUS

The Dallas Creek Project was authorized by the Colorado River Basin Act
of September 30, 1968 (Public Law 90-537) as a participating project under
the Colorado River Storage Project Act of April 11, 1956 (Public Law 84-
485). The draft environmental statement was filed with C.E.Q. March 8, 1976
and a public hearing was held April 17, 1976.

The FY 1976 Public Works Appropriation Act included $1,057,000 for FY 1976
and $450,000 for the transition quarter to begin construction of the pro-
ject. The Presidents budg~t contains $4,500,000 for FY 1977 to continue
construction.

Negotiat~ons with the Tri County Water Conservancy District on the project
repayment contract are nearing completion. The Colorado State Department
of Highways is currently designing the relocation of U.S. Highway 550 at
the Ridgway Reservoir Basin and cooperative planning between the Bureau and
utility companies for relocation of facilities is underway. The design of
recreation facilities for Ridgway Reservoir has been completed by private
contract.

PLAN

The Dallas Creek Project would develop water of the Uncompahgre River and
tributaries for municipal and industrial use and for irrigation. It would
also provide benefits to recreation, fish, and flood control.

The only storage facility involved would be Ridgway Reservoir on the Un-
compahgre River. In addition to regulating the flow of the river this
reservoir would also store surplus flows of Dallas Creek. It would pro-
vide storage for municipal and industrial uses both above and below the re-
servoir and for increased irrigation supplies above the reservoir by ex-
change. It would also provide for flood control, recreation, and fishery
enhancement.
