FOREST SERVICE Both the Pacific Southwest and Inter-mountain Regions of the Forest Service have released their Draft Regional Plans and Draft Environmental Impact Statements. The Other Regions in the PSIAC area are due to release their plans shortly. The plans contain general information and program direction for water resources, especially on National Forest areas. In general, the resource outputs are based upon the Renewable Resources Planning Act levels approved by Congress. Individual National Forests will use the Regional Plans in their Land Management Planning process. The Forest Plan will then be used to update the RPA data base in 1985, as well as guide the management activities on the respective Forests. Final technical concurrance and approval have been given to the Sacramento River Basin Special Study No. I-B Extension in California. The study will assess the effects of logging road construction, as regulated by the California Forest Practices Act, on streamside protect- ion zones. Soil loss will be estimated and its effects. on the stream will be assessed using biological indicators. The study is scheduled to be completed in form for final review during FY-82. The Forest Service participated in completing the following working papers for the Arizona-New Mexico Little Colorado River Basin Study: Erosion and Sediment and a Summary Report. Both the Land Ownership-Administration and the Vegetative . Communities maps for the Lower Rio Grande River Basin Study in New Mexico were sent to TAC in Portland for drafting. The expected completion date is early Fall of 1981. New Mexico SCS has the lead for this study and probably will submit a more detailed report. Within the Battle Flat demonstration area, Prescott National Forest in Arizona, 11 stream gages and 9 precipi- tation gages have been installed. An operating plan is formulated and work on a draft treatment plan is progress- ing. -14-
