.

.

Montezuma Valley to McElmo Creek, while the second 1S a proposal for

industrial reuse of McElmo Creek water.

Current studies call for consideration of two alternatives for the

concrete lining of portions of the MVI distribution system, and one

alternative to concrete pipe 27 miles of the system and to concrete line

13 miles as part of stage I. Collecting and transporting saline water

for powerplant use is being considered as stage II of this investigation.

Of the three stage I alternatives, the concrete piping and lining

alternative would be the most costly ($736,000 per mg/L) but would

also realize the greatest salinity reduction (5.3 mg/L at Imperial

Dam). The saline water collection, storage, and transportation com-

ponent for stage II could reduce salinity by up to 6.2 mg/L at a cost

of $974,000 per mg/L. Full development of the canal lining or piping

alternatives, combined with on-farm measures, could preclude developing

the saline water collection and transportation alternative. The overall

cost-effectiveness of all measures which would be taken by the Soil

Conservation Service and the Water and Power Resources Service would be

considered in light of Colorado River Water Quality Improvement Program

goals in selecting a recommended plan.

A fish and wildlife coordination report is being prepared, and a

wildlife plan to compensate for the loss of wildlife habitat because of

canal and lateral improvement is being developed.

Following transmittal of a favorable feasibility report. Congress

could authorize the unit for construction and advance planning studies

could begin. Costs and designs would be redefined, and operation and

maintenance contracts would then be negotiated and signed with the

MVI.

Under Stage II, consideration

of cos t-sharing arrangement s 'CO\. 472

II
