000500

An additional warming hut/ski patrol office would be constructed in Alternatives
Band F, Space for a small caretaker unit and ski patrol offices would be
provided in conjunction with mid-mountain and/or summit facilities in all action
alternatives. Service roads within the ski area would expand by varying lengths
in Alternatives E-H.

f, Summer Uses

Opportunities for summer uses would be increased in all action alternatives
through the expansion of the on-mountain hiking and mountain biking trail system
(see Table S-10 below) and through summer gondola programs. The Government Trail
would be upgraded aDd rerouted for a portion of its length through mid-Burnt
Mountain in all alternatives, except Alternative E. It would be rerouted to a
location below its current alignment through Kelly Park to avoid big game summer
range impacts.

Summer uses would continue to be concentrated within the Baldy Mountain portion
of the permit area in Alternatives B, F and H. A summertime area closure would
be instituted in Alternatives A, B, F, G, and H for most of Burnt Mountain and
for access to the Wilderness from the permit area. In Alternative E, a Burnt
Mountain gondola would result in more extensive summer uses on Burnt Mountain
than on Baldy Mountain.

Table S-IO: Hiking/BikinglHorsebackRiding Trail System by Alternative (length in miles)
New Miles TotaIMiles
Alternative NFSL Private Total NFSL Private Total %Increase1
A 7.0 2.1 9.1
B 12.7 2.6 15.3 19.7 4.7 24.4 268
E 8.4 1.2 9.6 15.4 3.3 18.7 205
F 9.0 3.9 12.9 16.0 6.0 22.0 242
G 7.8 3.9 11.7 14.8 6.0 20.8 229
H 9.1 2.4 11.5 16.1 4.5 20.6 226

I Percent increase over Alternative A

Guided jeep tours would continue to be provided in all alternatives, although
they would be reduced or relocated in certain alternatives. In Alternatives A
and H, guided tours to both Elk Camp and Sam's Knob would continue as currently
provided, In Alternative G, the Elk Camp tour would be discontinued, while the
Sam's Knob tour would continue as currently provided. In Alternatives B, E, and
F, both tours could continue if they were rerouted or scheduled to avoid
conflicts with mountain biking and hiking uses in those alternatives.

B. OTHER ALTERNATIVES/COMPONENTS CONSIDERED, BUT ELIMINATED
FROM DETAILED STUDY

In response to public comments on the DEIS, the range of alternatives for the
FEIS was revised to eliminate DEIS Alternatives C and D, modify Alternative B,
and add Alternative H. Alternative C was eliminated because its general focus
and specific elements were redundant with those in other alternatives,
particularly Alternative H. Alternative D, the Permittee's Proposed Action in
the DEIS, was eliminated because ASC submitted a revised master plan proposal to
TOSV for final approval (April 1993), This new proposal is essentially
equivalent to Alternative G, as revised for the FEIS.

Summary . 21
