Kowski, Director
National Park Service
Southwest Region
Post Office Box 728
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501

T-..
.,
.,
1)

In general, the State of Colorado concurs in the proposal as out-
lined in the August, 1970, document on this subject prepared by the Na-
tional Park Service. However, we would recommend that the proposed
Motor Nature Trail extension not be constructed and that the Ute Canyon
portion of the wilderness area be extended closer to the existing Motor
Nature Trail.

D
n
r
D

Dear Mr. Kowski:

I am writing to convey the position of the State of Colorado with
regard to the proposed wilderness designation in the Colorado National
Monument.

t

D

Because of the developments already in place in the east and west
entrance areas, we do not recommend that the balance of those areas (opart
from the access roods) be added to the proposed wilderness areas but we do
advocate their monagement as if they were wilderness. There is indeed some
question that the wilderness designation is really appropriate for this area
which is so surrounded by highway and other development; however, the use
of tre wilderness designation to preclude further development is, in our opinion,
justified.

r'
L

We bel ieve that the National Park Service should develop, in co-
operation with the Colorado Division of Game, Fish and Parks, procedures
for the reduction of wildlife population in the Monument by licensing quol ified
hunters to toke the game rather than having the animals taken by National Park
Service employees. This would provide more hunting opportunities to sportsmen.

D
D
n

r

33

,.
J
l..i
