Fifth <br />and Rood Avenue, Grand Junction, Colorado, on December 1, 1970. <br /> <br />n <br />D <br /> <br />The hearing was opened at 9:00 a.m. by the Hearing Officer, Mr. <br />John M. Davis, 7272 E. Camino Valle Verde. Tucson, Arizona <br />85715. Approximately 83 persons were present, with 20 giving oral <br />statements. Several representatives of governmental agencies were <br />present as observers. The hearing was recorded by Mr. James P. Ford, <br />Official Reporter, Federal Reporting Service, 991 Ursula Street, <br />Denver, Colorado 80010. <br /> <br />TI <br /> <br />After everyone wishing to make a statement was heard, the hearing <br />. was closed at 11 :30 a.m. on the satl)e day. <br /> <br />Tl <br />l.J <br /> <br />THE PRELIMINARY WILDERNESS PROPOSAL <br /> <br />TI <br />TI <br /> <br />The Monument <br />Colorado National Monument is in Mesa County on the western <br />slope of the Rocky Mountains in west-central Colorado. Its wes~ <br />entrance is 3 miles south of Fruita, a town 20 miles east of the Utah <br />State line. The east entrance is 3 miles west of Grand Junction, <br />Colorado. Rim Rock Drive, a scenic highland road, links the two <br />entrances. Major access routes to the monument are Interstate 70, <br />and U.S. Highways 6, 24, and 50 from Grand Junction; and <br />Interstate 70 and U.S. 6 and 50 from Fruita. <br /> <br />Ii <br />L <br /> <br />T1 <br />,. <br />L <br /> <br />The monument was established by Presidential proclamation in 1911 <br />and enlarged in 1933. Minor boundary adjustments were made in <br />1959. It now includes 17.668.52 acres and contains extraordinary <br />examples of erosion which are of great geological, scientific, and <br />scenic interest.
