Notice. of the <br />hearing had appeared in the Federal Register on September 30, 1970, <br />and in local newspapers in Grand Junction, Fruita, Delta, Hotchkiss, <br />Montrose, and Gunnison, Colorado. Eighty.three people attended the <br />hearing, and 20 oral statements were presented. A total of 241 letters <br />were received. <br /> <br />l1 <br />..L: <br /> <br />I~ <br /> <br />11 <br />L <br /> <br />Of the agencies. private organizations. and individuals testifyin9 or <br />submitting written views, eight of the 34 organizations and 48 of the <br />286 individuals supported the preliminary wilderness proposal. Two <br />of the public agencies, 23 of the private organizations, and 228 of <br />the 286 individuals commenting favored a larger wilderness. Two <br />public agencies and nine individuals favored wilderness with no <br />specific recommendations. Two private organizations opposed the <br />establishment of wilderness.
