Water which runs through canals during the non-imQation.
season seeps from canals and picks up salt as it Ilttums to the river. Th.plan
would put winter livestock water In pipe for distribution. This will helpconttol
salinity of the Colorado River at or below 1972 levels as measured at th,..e
locations on the river. The project would reduce the salinity Iltsulting In alj annual
reduotion in salinity at Imperial Dam of 6.7 mg/L The Colorado River Basin
Salinity Control Forum has approved the plan.

Public Law 93-320, June 24, 1974; and Public Law 98-569, October 30. 1984.

None required.

Planning Report approved March 22. 1984. and Final Preconstruotion Report
approved August 13, 1987.

Previous agreements with the Mexican Govemment conceming salinity cQntrolln
the Colorado Alver and Public Law 93-320 are based upon social and political
justifications. The cost elfeotiveness of this unit is measured In tenns of annual
cost for each ton of salinity reduotion in the Colorado River at Imperial Oarll. The.
annual cost of the unit is $2,727.000 which includes the total Investment annual
equivalent cost of $2.292,000 (at 8.875 percent for 50 yeats) plus the annu~ OM&R
of $435.000. The Lower Gunnison Unit is estimated to annually remove 74.000
tons of salt from the Colorado Aiver at an annual cost of approximately $3tper ton
of salt.

The winter water portion of the Unit will be completed in FY 1995 with the balance
of the Unit deferred until needs develop for elimination of additional salinity. The
completion date for the winter water portion changed from FY 1994 to FY 1 ~95 dUe
to the work being perfonned by water users rather than contraoting the worlMor the
Manoken System Improvements. As of September 30. 1992, the project is 6
percent complete.

-~

'J

fi
~i;

187

"- ~;
l: 1;1
:t:-~-m
