OTHER ROADLESS AREAS

The remaining portions of Roadless Area A and the lands within
Roadless Areas Band C contain non,Federal lands and Federal lands
subject to grazing.

Because man's presence is obvious in both works and activities, the
lands under grazing permit are not proposed for wilderness designation
at this time. Of the 206,662 gross acres within the monument, 160.500
are being grazed.

.~.

Of the 24 grazing permittees, 7 also own land within the authorized
boundary of the monument. All permittees use 4-wheel drive vehicles in
their grazing operations. Eight permittees routinely haul water by truck
to their livestock and the other permittees also haul water but less
frequently. Ten permittees utilize water impoundments which are
generally maintained by the use of motorized equipment. Separating
grazing allotments, there are more than 50 miles of fencing, which is
also maintained by use of vehicles. Also, many of the permittees have
additional fencing within their allotment areas as well as holding pens,
loading ramps and corrals. By the year 2000, there could still be about
125,000 acres under grazing permit. Final phase, out of grazing is not
expected until around the year 2030.

POTENTIAL WILDERNESS ADDITIONS

Areas classified in the master plan for future management in a primitive
condition but which now do not qualify as wilderness because of
conflicting uses or interests, can be proposed as potential wilderness
additions when these areas will, within a determinable time, qualify and
be available Federal land.

Most of the private lands and areas now grazed are proposed as
potential wilderness additions. A special provision is recommended in
the legislation establishing wilderness at Dinosaur National Monument
giving the Secretary of the Interior the authority to designate these
lands as wilderness at such time he determines they qualify. These lands
total about 130,300 acres.

9

1256
