UNIT 1

The main features of this proposed 45.100'acre wilderness are the
spectacular river canyons of the Green and Yampa. Sixty miles of river
are included, 37 along the Green and 23 along the Yampa. These rivers
form the core of the wilderness and are the stage from which the
pristine beauty of this rugged canyon country unfolds. The wilderness
unit varies greatly in width, from about 1,000 feet to 3-% miles. It is
one of the most beautiful and spectacular segments of primitive.
unspoiled river canyon in America.

The wilderness line runs for the most part along section lines, with a
few segments on natural featu res such as the Green and Yampa River
banks and along canyon rims.

Three short sections of primitive roads totaling 2.9 miles are to be
closed and obliterated and the lands involved added to the wilderness
unit. Large sections of Roadless Area A are not included in the
proposed wilderness unit, due to grazing activity, private lands, and
other adverse uses.

The National Park Service wi Iderness proposal herein is dependent upon
the revocation of all the withdrawals for reclamation and power-site
purposes prior to the final wilderness recommendation being made to
Congress.

IDENTIFICATION OF WILDERNESS MANAGEMENT FACILITIES
AND PRACTICES

There are six existing pnmltlve campsites within the proposed
wilderness along the Green and Yampa Rivers. These contain pit type
toilets, fireplaces, tables, and wells with hand pumps.

SPECIAL PROVISIONS

It is proposed that legislation designating wilderness at Dinosaur
National Monument provide for the continued use of tables at
campsites along the Green and Yampa Rivers within wilderness. The
tables are deemed necessary for proper control and management of
camping by groups on river float trips.

8
