Floodway

The noadway Is located in the floodplain ad.
jacent to the river between the two le\'ees.
:.' ') Lanos located outside the flood.....ay are
~ protected from floods. .
::,
:;:. The ability to control possible floods along the
\o\\'er Colorado Riyer Is dependent upon the
f100dway as well as the flood control storage
capacities in reservoirs behind storage dams.
When flood control storage capacities contain
an oyer abundance of water, Reclamation Is re-
quired to release water.
The f100dway is designed to carry these tem-
porary overabundances of water. These high
{JO\\'5 can occur either as regulated flood flows
or as non regulated flows that are created by
localllash floods.

Maintenance Roads

Roads are constructed and maintained on the
levees and adjacent to armored banklines. The
le\'ce road!'! are used to drive to areas where
river work is needed. The public also uses
these roads to drive to lands and to hunting,
fishing, and recreation areas along the river.
Howe\.er, the roads are maintained for opera-
tion and maintenance of Reclamation projects
and are not maintained up to public roads
standards: so \\.hlle they are open to the
public, the public is required to use them at lis
own risk.

DI-Y Cuts

It is often necessary to realign the river in
order to control erosion and to improve
hydraulic efficiency so waler llo\\'s down the

'Cro..........ecliofJ of a typical floodplain

_..'

river as smoothly as possible,
In the most desirable align.
menl, without causing high
groundwater tables under
developed arc<'ls.

Sometimes a portion of the
river channel is relocated by
digging a new channel. This is
done so the river can lIow in a
more direct path to lis destina-
llon. A dry cut Is often ac-
complished by using a dredge.

River Studies
And Reviews

The Bureau of Reclamation has
ongoing conslnH:tion and
maintenance i\cli\"iti<'~ up and
down the river. Periodic
reviews and studies of the river
reveal sections that need im-
provement or protection.
Reclamation reviews the situa-
tion and lists the kinds 01 work
that will improve the hydraulic
efficiency of the river. Then it
examines a ,'arlety 01 methods
thai will achieve the desired
result and determines whether
the response should be a train.
ing structure, bankJine protec-
tion, dredging, or levee work.

US Dt!par1ment of the Inlt>rinr
Bureau 01 Reclamarion
Lou'er Colorado Region

)'uma Projects Offict'
P,D.
