.

, 000296

problems as well as on an area just east of Holly. Jerry Buckleiter. Agricultural Enl>ineer with

the USDA-ARS Water Management Unit in Fort Collins, will report on the VERIS Rapid

Salinity Mapping Equipment and the work the Unit has done throughout Colorado and the

Arkansas River area. The VERIS is a drag-type colter equipped toolbar with electromagnetic

sensors that measures electrical conductivity/resistance that can be converted into salinity

readings. These readings can be measured with the VERIS being pulled at 5 to 12 miles per

hour, depending on the roughness of the field, behind a pickup that contains all the monitoring

and recording devises.

Following lunch, the Northeast Prowers Soil Conservation District will give an update of

the SCD's activities as part of the annual meeting and directors will discuss cost-share funding to

be made available to District members through grants from the Colorado Water Conservation

Board and the Environmental Protection Agency. Cost share funding will include surge values,

trash screens, gated pipe and polyacrylamides as well as surface and subsurface drainage system.

The afternoon session will begin at 2:00 pm with "Alternative Practices for More

Effective Use of Forage Resources" presented by Tim Steffens. southeast rel>ion ranl>e

manal>ement specialist with CSU Cooperative Extension. "By better utilizing the forages we

produce, we can increase returns from the same piece of land," Tim said, "and !!illY is the time

we need to increase returns". Kevin Larsen. superintendent of the CSU Plainsman Research

Center near Walsh, will be discussing dryland and limited irrigation cropping. "As pumping

rates decline with the declining groundwater amounts, the ability to produce optimum yields and

returns with less water becomes more important each year", Larsen stated.

Additional information on the Workshop and SCD Meeting can be obtained by calling

the Holly SCD-NRCS office at 719-537-6506.
NEPWSMNR200.2
