With soil moisture low and fuel cost high, farmers

can't afford to run their tractors and equipment through the

field plowing out the moisture and, in many cases, unnessarily

burning fuel", according to Jim Valliant, regional irrigation

specialist for Colorado State university Cooperative Extension.

Many farmers moldboard plow their old stands of alfalfa to

plant corn the following year but four-years of study, comparing

plowing to reduced tillage, show that they are losing an average

of $21.51 per acre.

Comparing the two methods of tillage from

1994 through 1997, the reduced tilled areas, which

:~
~~~
were: (l)disked twice in the spring, corrugated,
sprayed and planted or (2)disked twice,
corrugated; planted and then sprayed, averaged
Colorado State University.
