Annual Report For 1969

Superintendent's Report

To
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

TO THE DffiECTORS AND STOCKUOLIlERS:

,
I

Gentlemen:

The following statements covering the operation and maintenance of
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company, its canals and reservoir s;ystem, are
submitted for your consideration.

AMITY CANAL

Early In 1969 it appeared that there would be a less than normal water
supply for Amity Stockholders. On April 1, onl,y 21,900 acre feet was im~
pounded in John Martin Reservoir and the Great Plains Reservoirs were
practically dry. However, heavy snows in March and rains in earl~: April
helped the situation, and water was not started in the Amity until April 28.
On May 4 the system received up to 2 inches of rain and water ....as shut out
until May 13. With small demand, only between 100 and 150 cfs was diverted
for Amity use until June 23whena se\'ere rain and hail storm hit most o( the
Amity System. Water was again shut out of the canal and started once more
on June 30. During this period storage was built up in John Martin Reservoir
which lasted until July 28. River flow held up very well the rest of the season,
More than ample rainfall retarded crop maturity. but water was in plentiful
supply.

Heavy rain in the Horse Creek area overtopped the Amit,}' at the
Horse Creek structure and washed the bank off near East Horse Creek.
This was the only damage sustained on the canal in 1969.

Widening and re-aligning the canal in Lamar Division is continuing.
We are now over 15 miles east of the Headgate where we are presently
cutting off a curve, making a new canal for some 900 (eet and turning a 72
degree curve into one of 19 degrees. This entails removing about 18,000
Cu, Yd. of dirt.

Bogs and curves were cleaned along the canal. Willows were sprayed.
A diesel weed burner was purchased. The burner is more effective than
spray against Johnson grass.

Page 16
