.

"

.

Water Quality Standards for Salinity-Colorado River System

)

The Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Forum will hold its next meeting in Silverthore,
Colorado on June 5, 2002. One of the majoragenda items will be consideration of the draft "2002 Review,
Water Quality Standards for Salinity, Colorado River System" (2002 Review) that has been prepared by
the Forum's Work Group. Since issuance of the 1999 Review, salinity control measures installed has
ipcreased from 721,000 tons/year to 863,300 tons/year. Salinity control measures leading to the removal
of an additional 946,700 tons of salt must be implemented by 2020 to meet the Program goal of
approximately 1.8 million tons of salt-load reduction annually.

The draft 2002 Review recommends no change in the numeric criteria and proposes a Plan of
Implementation for controlling salinity. It is anticipated that the Forum will authorize the release of the
2002 Review for public comment at its June 5th meeting. Two public information work shops will be held
in the Basin to receive comments prior to issuance of the final document. Following adoption of a [mal
report by the Forum, the report will be submitted to the State Water Resources Control Board for its
consideration. Following adoption by the State, the report is submitted to the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EP A) for its consideration for approval.

California Re~ional Water Ouality Control Board.
