The difference in flow (volume) is due to
irrigation in Lower Moapa Valley.

Ground, Water

All water, except flood flows, enters Upper Moapa Valley as a
major ,underground source. several miles into the study area it
surfades in several large springs. In the area of the springs,
8,900 !acre-feet of ground water is pumped for irrigation,
munic~pal supply to overton, and cooling at Nevada Power
electtical generating plant.

About 4,900 acre-feet of groundwater is pumped from shallow wells
(to 100 feet deep) for irrigation in the Meadow Valley Wash area.

Littl. pumping occurs in Lower Valley because the quality of the
water!is poor for agricultural or domestic use. Ground water
sampl~s from wells in Lower Moapa Valley reflect the presence of
geoloqic formations containing soluble and, moderately soluble
minerals, such as halite (sodium chloride) and gypsum (calcium
sulfate). Sodium and calcium are the principal positive ions
found'in the ground water while sulfate and bicarbonate are the
predo~inant negative ions.

water'Rigbts and Water Use

The m~jor use of water is by irrigated agriculture in Moapa
valley. Water is also consumed by the Nevada Power electrical
generating plant, domestic uses, by phreatophytes and by
evaporation. The reuse of water in onfarm systems is minor. The
effect of water reuse on irrigation efficiency is small. The
principal reuse of water consists, of irrigation runoff, return
flowS" and power plant return flow in the Upper Valley being
delivered to the Lower Valley for irrigation.

19
