""'"
e\!
...
C"';
f;;

RECREATIONAL VEHICLE AND CAMPING SITE STANDARDS

Recreational uses, including recreational vehicle and camping sites are
appropriate uses of floodplains. However, concessionaires must recognize
that R.V. and camping facilities that are located within the floodplain
of the Colorado River will be flooded and unusable during times of high
water. This should be taken into consideration when determining the
economic viability of the concession and of placing facilities in the
floodplain. The following standards should be used when developing
recreational sites in order to minimize flood damage:

- R.V./camp sites should not be placed in floodplains if there is a
potential for injury or loss of life. Flooding from the Colorado
River does not threaten injury or loss of life, however, flash
flooding from tributary washes could. Flood hazard evaluations
should be completed determining there is no potential for injury
or loss of life before placing R.V./camp sites in tributary flood
areas.

Certain camping and R.V. facilities, such as pads, cabanas, picnic
tables, etc. may be placed below the 100 year flood elevation.
Appropriate construction materials and methods should be used to
minimize flood damage. All improvements must be anchored to prevent
being swept away by floodwaters or be removed before flooding.

- It is recommended that water supply and sanitary sewage systems be
located outside the floodplain.

Water supply and sanitary sewage systems must be designed to minimize
or eliminate infiltration of floodwaters into the system and discharge
from the systems into flood waters.

- On-site waste disposal systems must be located to avoid impairment to
them or contamination from them during flooding.

- Electrical and cable television systems should be fldodproofed and
the outlets must be placed above the 100 year floodplain elevation.

- Bathhouses and other permanent structures must be constructed to
the standards of the NFIP

A-13
