'

gathering of wild grasses and, possibly, quarrying activities in
the natural rock outcrops.

ARCHITECTURAL/HISTORICAL RESOURCES

There are two historic cabins in the Weminuche Wilderness (see
Map). The first (T39N, R4w, Section 19; Historical Preservation
Site Number 27/05/0004) is maintained by the San Juan Forest
Servir.e and, according to t.he Forest Ranger, was constructed around
1902 (Figure 1).

The second cabin (T39 1/2N, R4W, Section 5; Historical Preservation
Site Number 27/05/-005) was constructed as a shelter for the
maintenance crew of an overflow ditch in the Los Pinos Valley
(Figure 2).

Both cabins are currently being evaluated for eligibility to the
National Register of Historic Places by the San Juan Forest. (Until
they have been found ineligible, the cabins must be considered
eligible, and provisions made for their protection and preservation.

RECOMMENDATIONS

By the evaluation guidelines for Wild Scenic River Studies, and in
the absence of a systematic survey to locate cultural resources, the
Los Pinos studt area does not appear "Outstandingly Remarkable" for
its Cultural Values. @owever, if the classification or use of this
section of the river would cause a greater influx of people into the
area, a potential for indirectly or directly impacting the cultural
resources will exist. Thus it will be necessary to comply with
Executive Order 11593 and the National Historic Preservation Act of
1966 (as amended) should the river be designated. This will entail:
(1) a systematic survey to identify all cultural resources, (2)
evaluating the resources by the National Register criteria for
eligibility and impact, and (3) developing mitigation measures to
preserve and protect eligible resources. )

3
