<br />HYDROLOGIC FEATURES AND RELATED DATA
<br />
<br />The Kansas river basin has experienced several major floods
<br />affecting the entire easteren half of the basin, and a great number
<br />of minor floods affecting the various tributaries or the main stem.
<br />General floods affecting all of the basin, or even the eastern half of
<br />the basin, are not frequent, although minor local floods cause con-
<br />siderable damage almost every year. The general climatic and
<br />topographic conditions over the basin, as a whole, are not conducive
<br />to excessive runoff. Conditions are such, however, that a local rain-
<br />fall of three or four inches a day in the central and eastern parts of
<br />the basin may produce a locally destructive flood on the tributary
<br />that drains the area affected. Storms of the cloudburst type quite
<br />frequently occur in these sections. The shape of the basin, the di-
<br />rection of its major axis (parallel to heavy storm paths), and the
<br />manner in which the larger tributaries enter the main stream all
<br />
