<br />KANSAS RIVER BASIN
<br />
<br />The des~ription of the physical features of the.Kansas River Basin
<br />has been abstracted largely from House Document No. 195, Seventy-
<br />third Congress, second session, entitled Kansas River, Colorado,
<br />Nebraska, and Kansas.
<br />
<br />GEOGRAPHY
<br />
<br />The Kansas river. basin includes portions of northeast Colorado,
<br />southern Nebraska, and nearly all of the northern half of Kansas.
<br />The basin lies between the Platte and Ncmaha rivers on the north
<br />and the Arkansas and Marais des CygIies rivers on the south. The
<br />basin is about 480 miles long and averages about 140 miles in width,
<br />with the ttlajor axis in a general east-and-west direction. The total
<br />drainage area is about 61,440 square miles, divided as follows:
<br />Colorado 9,400. square miles, Nebraska 17,500 square miles, and
<br />Kansas 34,540 square miles. (See Fig. 1.)
<br />The Kansas river is formed by the junction of the Republican
<br />and Smoky Hill rivers near Junction City, Kan., flows easterly for
<br />a distance of 169 miles and enters the Missouri river at Kansas
<br />City, Mo. The principal tributaries are:
<br />1. ~moky Hill river, which rises in northeastern Colorado and
<br />flows east northeast, paralleling the southern boundary of the Kan-
<br />sas basin to join with the Republican rivcr east of Junction City,
<br />Ran. The Smoky Hill river ha~ two large tributaries, the Saline
<br />and Solomon rivers, which head near the Colorado line and flow
<br />eastward to enter the Smoky Hill river east of Salina, Kan.
<br />2. The Republican river, which rises in northeastern Colorado,
<br />Bows northeast, east and southeast through Colorado, Nebraska and
<br />. unites with the Smoky Hill river east of Junction City, Kan., in
<br />east central Kansas. Its tributaries include the Arikaree river,
<br />Frenchm'an, Medici.ne, Beaver, Sappa and Ptrairie Dog creeks.
<br />Beaver, Sappa and Prairie Dog creeks head near. the Colorado line
<br />in northwest Kansas and flow northeast entering the Republican
<br />river in Nebraska. The main stem enters Kansas southwest of St.
<br />Francis in Cheycnne county, and .flows diagonally across Cheyenne
<br />county where it enters Nebraska in the vicinity of Benkelman. The
<br />river reenters Kansas in the northeast corner of J cwell 'county and
<br />flows southeast through Rcpublic, Clay and Geary counties.
