0515

construction by the Corps of Engineers in the Upper South Platte
Rl. ver basin. They are: the Cherry Creek Dam and Reservoir
project constructed in the 1950's; Chatfield Dam and Reservoir on
the South Platte "River just upstream of Denver which is nearing
completion; and Bear Creek Dam and Reservoir which is currently
under construction on Bear Creek just west of Denver. These dams
do not have any significant effect on the flood flows in the
study area.

:roTENTIAL PROJECTS

There are no known potential projects in the basin that, if
:Implemented, would affect the current condition in the study area.

Sl'REAM CIlABACTERISTICS

The Lower South Platte River flows through the semiarid
rolling plains region of northeastern Colorado and southwestern
Nebraska. The l.arger floods, covering long reaches of the river,
have been caused by heavy rains from frontal storm activity over
major portions of the basin. Heavy snowfall in the Rocky Mountains
Jm:',f cause snoWllLelt flooding. Snowmel.t floods have been more
"IlCderate than storm rainfall floods, but are usua1.ly of longest
duration. SnoWllLelt floods genera1.ly occur from April to June on
the South Platte River. Storms over tributaries in the lower
portion of the basin are the major source of flooding in the study
area. Storms over tributaries in the upper portion of the basin,
however, do not produce enough volume to reach the study area.
J)RmRging floods on the Low-er South Pl.atte River have been recorded
during the period April. to September.

3
