<br />In Louisiana, Piping Plovers winter along the Gulf in <br />Cameron Parish and Jefferson Parish. Occasionally, birds are <br />seen in New Orleans Parish and~nion Parish (Upper Quachita <br />National Wildlife Refuge). Bird~ winter along the coast of <br />Mississippi in Harrison, Hancock, and Jackson counties, and on <br />Gulf Island National Seashore. Use of sites in Alabama is <br />restricted to Mobile and Baldwin counties and principally occurs <br />on Dauphin Island. <br />The number of Piping Plovers recorded in a single year on <br />.Florida CBC's is less than 100, yet there are.a number of sites <br />where birds are regularly seen. Color-banded inland birds have <br />been seen most frequently along the Florida panhandle from Santa <br />Rosa County east to St. George Island (Franklin County), and <br />further south from Clearwater Beach (Pinellas County) to the <br />Florida Keys (Haig 1987a). Atlantic birds use northeastern <br />Florida beaches from Jacksonville south to Fort Pierce. <br />Winter use of sites in Caribbean, Central American, and <br />other southern areas is poorly documented. The low number of <br />Piping plovers observed on Gulf of Mexico censuses indicate that <br />Piping Plovers must be using morel areas than are currently known <br />(Haig and Oring 1985). Sporadic sightings of Piping Plovers have <br />been reported in the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda; Cuba, Jamaica, <br />Mexico, and Virgin Islands (Haig and Oring 1985). <br /> <br />16 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />t'. <br /> <br />..... <br />
