<br />o <br />Cl <br />N <br />W <br />c..o <br />~ <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />and one....third of a pound in weight" The total weight of fish tAken from <br /> <br />this reach was estimated to be more than 5s290 pounds~ or 15 pounds per <br /> <br />acre of strearr~bed~ <br /> <br />460 In 1949~ Ser\~ce biologists made 1~721 creel census contacts, <br /> <br />representing 2502 per cent of the 69835 man-dAYs of fishing use estimated <br /> <br />for the same reach of the river during th;g.t year" It was found that the <br /> <br />success ratio had dropped to 0027 fish per man=hour, with a total estimated <br /> <br />catch amounting to only 8~ 774 trout averaging approximately 9.,5 inches in <br /> <br />length and one=third of a pound in weight" Total wight of fish removed <br /> <br />from this portion of t.he river in 1949 was estimated to be over 3,9140 <br /> <br />pounds" This harvest amounted to approximately 9 pounds per acre of <br /> <br />stream-bede <br /> <br />470 A careful analysis of the data shows th~t the slump in the <br /> <br />q~lity of fishing on the Colorado River in 1949 as compared with 1948 <br /> <br />was manifested Qy a decreased success ratio for fishermen of all degrees <br /> <br />of skill" In part this is believed to have been the result of much higher <br /> <br />volume of flow in the river during the early part of the 1949 season than <br /> <br />on corresponding dates in 19480 These hi.gh nows persisted until the end <br /> <br />of July, -whereas in 1948 the stream flow had receded to a stage facilitat- <br /> <br />ing both bait and fly fishing before the middle of July" <br /> <br />480 More important~ however~ was the fact tha.t during August and <br /> <br />September of 1949 construction activity above and below Granby' Dam placed <br /> <br />large a1I1Ounts of sediment in the river e Al though the silt load diminished <br /> <br />as the distance below Granby Dam increased$ the water remained noticeably <br /> <br />murky at Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado, a.bout 17 miles below the Dame As <br /> <br />a result, a severe handi.c:9p wa.s imposed upon fishermen using artificial <br /> <br />flies, usually the most productive means of taking trout in l~te summer <br /> <br />and early fall.
