'-'
( )
.. OJ
00
-.J
:.il

.

The goals and objectives for Water Resources development in
Oklahoma are stated under Title 82, Section 1085.2 of the Oklahoma
Statutes, revised in 1972: ". . . to develop state-wide and local
plans to assure the best and most effective use and control 'of
water to meet both the current and long-range needs of the people
of Oklahoma. . ." To meet the above goals and objectives, the
Oklahoma Water Resources Board with the cooperation of various
State and federal agencies, is preparing a water plan as required
by, State law and have completed the first phase of the State
water plan. This plan has and will develop a comprehensive
program for conservation, development, management and use of the
water resources of the State.

Most of Oklahoma's water resources are located in eastern
Oklahoma where flood control is the principal water problem,
while western Oklahoma suffers from 'a lack of water sources. The
primary water resources of this area are the groundwaters which
underlie most of the entire High Plains Section and are essentially
independent of the valley alluviums. The majority of the present
irrigation demand is serviced from ground water and this trend
will continue under future conditions. The groundwater is a
depleting resource and, with continued expansion of irrigation,
problem areas with respect to groundwater will develop.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I'
I
I
I
I

34
