D2:333

.
,

Second Box Canyon. In that area, paricularly on the west side of the river, the cottonwood is apparently
regenerating on the river-side of the existing cottonwood slands.

A second exception is along Sand Creek, a few hundred yards upstream from its confluence with the
Piedre River. This area is wider than usual and shows strong evidence of meandering water courses
during high f10VJs. The result is a dislinctive riparian community, occupying a large area. Species
composition is similar to other riparian areas, but vigor and succession are greatly improved. Broader
distribution 01 size, and presumably age, classes are indicative 01 a well.established riparian ecosystem.

It is areas such as these that (1) are representative of the most extensive riparian ecosystems in the
proposed wilderness and (2) will be the logical source of riparian community expansion, both through
seed dispersal and the normal processes of channel and associated vegetation development.

5
