:-< 0051

Arkansas Diversion Dam

The Arkansas Divorsion Dam would be constructed across the Arkansas
River immediately downstroam from the existing bridge on State Highway 89
about 1 mile south of Holly, Golorado. 'l'he dam would consist of a con"
crete overflow section 470 feot in length. The.crest elevation of the
overflow section would be at an elevation of 3,380 feet, two feet above
the existing stream bed. A radial gate controlled canal inlet structure
would be constructed at the south end of the diverSion dam yd:th a capaCity
of about 200 second-feet. The estimated cost ot the diversion dam and
inlet structure would be about ~~406,000 based on July 1953 prices.

Diversion Canal

The diversion OOllal with a capacity of 200 second-feet would trans"
port the diverted water from the diversion dam dlong a ccurse south of
and parallel to the drkansas River to the potential Granada Reservoirc
The canal .vould be constructed ~~th a compacted earth lining and yrould
have a length of about l2,000 feet. The estimated cost of the Granada
Canal would be ~122,000 based on July 1953 prices~

Granada Reservoir

The Granada Reservoir would be located about 3.5 miles southeast of
Holly, Oolorado en the south side of the Arkansas River. The reservoir
With a capacity of about 301000 acre-feet yrould inundate 2,200 aores and
muld extend about 2 milos west. of the state line into Oolorado and about
l.5 miles east of the state line into Kansas. The normal water surface
elevation at capacity 30,000 acre-feet would be 3,377 feet. A permanent
fish and Ydldlife conservation pool of about 3,000 acre-feet, covering
about.600 acres, would be maintained at a water surface elevation of
3,356. The reservoir .vould be formod by the construction of about
33,700 linear feot of earth-fill dikes. The main dikes paralleling the
river bank would. have a maximum height of 38 feet and would extend for
a distance of 19,200 feet. Transverse dikes at the east and west ends
of the main dikes would extend from the main dike to the high ground
on the south side of the river. The outlGt works with a capacity of 500
second-feot would consist of two 6' x 10\ concreto conduits located at
the east end of the river side dike. Natural surface drainage into the
reservoir from the sand hills on the south would be rogligible. The
spillway would consist of an uncontrolled riprap protected open channel
across the sandhills at the southeast cornor of the reservoir. It weuld
have a capacity of about 425 second-foet with a head of 2 foet. Seepa~e
losses from the reservoir would be prevented through construction of ;;i
cut-off trench extending to the underlying rock. The trench wouid hq-v'e
an aVel'age depth of about 40 feet and would be backfilled with 1inperV'ious
earth materials. The Granada Reservoir is estimated to cost $6,768,000
based on July 1953 prices,

- 2 -
