"e'

--
M

CHAPTER III

WATER SUPPLY

Only in very dry years is it necessary to allow natural flow to reach
the Raynard ditch, a small ditch diverting downstream from Grand
Tunnel ditch. The acreage that would be supplied replacement water
from Rifle Gap Reservoir is 2,450 acres, the area under Rifle Canyon,
Grand Tunnel, and Raynard ditches. The remaining ditches, which are
small, would receive their water supply from return flow as in the past.

Estimated monthly gross diversion requirements for project lands and
lands to receive replacement water are shown in the following table. The
total requirements are based on the net irrigable area of the project
(6,870 acres) which is the irrigable area corrected for nonproductive lands.

ESTIMATED MONTHLY GROSS DIVERSION HE( UIREl'1ENTS
Percent Dry Elk Harvey Davie Lower Rifle
of Valley y Mesa ?J ditch lands 4
Month annual (acre-feet)l (acre-feet) :(acre-feet )Y (acre-feet)
April 4 160 620 110 440
May 15 620 2,370 430 1,670
June 22 910 3,470 640 2,420
July 22 910 3,470 640 2,420
August 18 740 2,800 510 1,990
September ~ 570 2,170 400 1,550
October 200 760 140 540
Total lOO , 4.110 15.660 2 870 11 0,0

W'

y Based on annual requirement of 3.3 acre-feet an acre for 1,250 net
irrigable acres.
?J Based on annual requirement of 3.3 acre-feet an acre for 4,750 net
irrigable acres.
Y Based on annual requirement of 3,3 acre-feet an acre for 870 net
irrigable acres.
W Based on annual requirement of 4.5 acre-feet an acre for 2,450 net
irrigable acres.
Return Flow

About 45 percent of the water diverted would be used consumptively on
project lands. Much of the remainder would return to stream channels.
Some of the return flow from lands under the Davie ditch could be used by
Lower Rifle Creek lands that would receive replacement water and on Harvey
Mesa, but the majority could not be reused in the area and would return to
the Colorado River.
