en
c:;
C'j

CHAPTER III

WATER SUYJ:'LY

above the dam site. Irrigation diversion records are collected and
maintained under the direction of the state Engineer.

Extensi on of Records

The available discharge records were extended by correlation to
cover the 20-year period, 1930 to 1949. The 7-year record on East
~.c~.,above tl1e.,QI'as.s.\[aJ.ll>yCaD.:!ilwas correlated with the record
of ~,B~;ver near Jl!l2.~~~' White River above Meeker drains the slopes
across the divide.-from Rifle Creek, and, like East Rifle Creek, has a
fairly high base flow. The gaged run-off of East Rifle .Creek was not
adjusted for the three smell irrigation diversions made above the gage
since these same diversions and resulting return flow would be expected
to continue with proj ect operation.

Discharge that would have occurred at Rifle Gap Dam site if no
diversions had been made to Grass Valley Canal was estimated by adding
canal diversions to discharge at the dam site where records were avail-
able concurrently. Otherwise the discharge was computed by adding
inflow between the two gages to discharge at the East Rifle Creek gage.
Inflow between the gages, most of which comes from West and Middle Rifle
Creeks, was computed from concurrent records at the gages, with consider-
ation given to the Grass Valley Canal diversions. The computed inflow
was extended to cover the 1930-l949 period by correlation with the flow
of Buzzard Creek near Collbran. The character of the Buzzard Creek
watershed and run-off is similar to that of J'Iest and Middle Rifle Creeks.

Available supply

From records and correlations, the average run-off of East Rifle
~reek above the Grass Valley Canal diversion is estimated at 29,700
acre-feet annually. The average run-off of Rifle Creek at the Rifle Gap
:lam site, with no diversions made to the Grass Valley Canal, is esti-
mated at 38,600 acre-feet annually. The estimated monthly and annual
flows of East Rifle Creek and of Rifle Creek at tile Rifle Gap Dam site
tor the 1930-l949 period are given in the tables on pages 20 and 21,
respecti '1e:...y.

:9
