The Fryingpan-Arkansas Project.; an independent self-sustaining
unit which can be readily integrateinto a comprehensive plan for
the complete development of the Up! Arkansas River Basin. The
project plan contelll>lates full utUzationof the water resourceS
of the Arkansas River in Oolorado ad the importation of additional
water froll! the Roaring Fork River llJll.nage of t.he Colorado River
Watershed.

Thit!l project would provide suplemental irrigation water for
322,000 acres of high grade iXTigalld land in the Arkansas Valley
in Colorado.,
Supplemental municipal and domestic water would be provided
for the cities and towns, in the valley having an aggregate popula-
tion of 134,000 people in 195'0.

Project controlled water would be utilized to generate,

The need fGll' a comprehensive study of wals to fully conserve

and augment the water supply af the Arkansas Valley has long been

recognited. the Bureau of Reclamation wasrequest.ed in 1936 to

, make a comprehensive investigation of the needs of the Upper
Arkansas River Basin and recommend plans to l!atisfy them. The

early studaes envisioned the i:ro.portation of a relatively large
quantity of Colorado River water into the Arkansa6 River 'Basin.
