This is particularly true in the Peach _. . ~'
Valley area east of Delta. During development of detailed designs, the cost L
of improvements to laterals or segments in those areas may be compared to 13"
the cost of a settlement with a landowner in lieu of providing irrigation ~ I
water. Additional salinity control benefits might also be generated by the ,
associated reduction of deep percolation from applications of on-farm - _~~$,
irrigation water. This "optional retirement" alternative would be at the ~ . rltr '
landowner's discretion and would require approval of the UVWUA. I J V~ '
V6\ '

Details of Lateral Systems
and Small Canal Segments

The existing lateral systems and small canal segments on the east side of
the Uncompahgre River which would be improved are described in the
following sections. Some prospective opportunities for alignment change are
noted for the South, Selig, and East Canal Laterals. Other opportunities for
alignment change would be realized during the preparation of detailed
designs and are expected to lower costs significantly. These unidentified
alignment changes are not reflected in the current construction cost
estimates.

Laterals are designated with the letter prefix of the parent canal system,
followed by either a mile station or another letter symbol. Canals in the
Uncompahgre Project have been assigned the folIowing letter symbols:

South
Loutzenhizer
Selig
East
Garnet

A
o
E
G
H

This naming system is used in many of the following tables and location
maps. Table 1 displsys a list of the East Side Laterals to be improved with
their initial capacities and total lengths. Detailed cost estimates for the
lateral systems and the smalI canal segments are presented in chapter 3.

South Canal Laterals

There are seven existing laterals (AB, AC, A1.5, AH, AG, AM, and Cedar
Creek Lateral) originating from the South Canal, which would be replaced
with buried concrete or PVC pipe. These laterals total 63 miles in length
and have capacities ranging from 2 to 70 cubic feet per second. The
locations of the laterals are shown on drawing No. 1244-417-1438.

13
