Inttoduction

In June 1985 the Colotado River Water Conservation District in
associat ion with the \~est Divide Watet Conservancy Qistrict and the,
Colotado Watet Conservation Board enteted into an agreement with
Hydro-Triad, Ltd., to perform a water resources planning study of the
West Divide Creek basin and sutroundings. This report presents the
re"ults of that study.

The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate several
viable alternative water storage and delivery systems on the various
stteams within the study area as shown on Figure I-I. The primary
project purpose is to better manage existing water ~upplies for
irrigation. Provision of some storage capacity for municipal al)d
industrial water supplies is, also included. Special consideration is
given in this study to facilit1es which are less costly than those
proposed in previous studies made by the United States Bureau of
Reclamation (USBR) and others, of ,the West Divide Project. The intent
here is to identify alternatives wh.ich may be suitab~e for State and
local funding.

B. Study Area

The study area is located in Mesa and Garfield counties in west-
central Colorado approximately 50 miles northwest of Grand Junction,
and 20 miles west of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The project area is
bounded on the North by a 28 mile segment of the Colorado River
running between the towns of New Castle and Parachute and including
the towns of Rifle and Silt. Two National Forests, the White Rive!;
National Forest-and the Grand Mesa National Forest bound the study area
to the West and South.

The highest elevations in the area are towards the Battlement
Mesa area in the South at approximately 11,000 feet. The land slopes
downward towards the Colorado River reaching a minimum elevation of
5,100 feet near Parachute. The elevation of project lands ranges from
5.200 feet to nearly 7,000 feet.

I-I

.1
