The status of present water use development and the

potential water requirements of the Basin are discussed.

The data presented in this report were developed from independent

reconnaissance field study and from analysis of water development work and

reports of others.

Time available for study and the preparation of this report did not

permit extensive field work nor did it provide for a detailed checking of

the work and opinions of others. The data presented should be considered

as preliminary, subject to refinement and adjustment as additional conclusive

information becomes available.

For purposes of analysis and reporting, the data on watershed area,

the origin of runoff, and the runoff contributed to the Colorado River by

the San Juan River are discussed under the heading INTRODUCTION. Present

stream depletion and potential water requirement are discussed as eight

divisions, each representing a separate tributary sub-basin of the San Juan

Basin.

Drainage Basin
The San Juan River is a major tributary of the Colorado River. It
joins the Colorado in Utah eighty miies upstream from Lee Ferry and drains
portions of the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

-l-
