The step~ critical for recovery in the next three <br />years are outlined and given priority in the Implementation Schedule. <br />1. Determine current distribution and DODulation trends of the <br />interior least tern. <br />The effectiveness of current conservation efforts will not be well- <br />understood until comprehensive distribution and census data have been <br />collected. Future plans for' recovery also will be curtailed until a <br />more accurate picture of thei species status is defined. <br />11. Assess status and distr;ibution of breedinE pODulations. <br />Most interior least te~n censusing has been carried out during <br />the breeding season. Results indicate interior least terns are <br />widely distributed, as ,scattered pairs or in concentrations at <br />breeding areas. The terns probably disperse great distances as <br />suggested by Boyd, and Thompson (1985). Continued search for new <br />breeding areas and evaluation of known areas are necessary to <br />complete our knowledge :of the birds' status. <br /> <br />32 <br />
