<br />~ <br />cv <br />~ <br />~ <br /> <br />CHAPTER II <br /> <br />PRESENT AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT <br /> <br />The land class summary is based on a reconnaissance survey made by <br />the Bureau of Reclamation in 1936-37 in connection with an inventory of <br />land in the Colorado River Basin, The results of that survey were mod- <br />ified as a result of additional land classification work accomplished <br />in the Gunnison River Basin in 1945 and 1946, Also minor adjustments <br />in acreages were made during the current investigations to reflect re- <br />cent changes in land status, The nonirrigated lands in the basin have <br />been grouped in classes 1 and 2. which are suitable for any climatically <br />adapted crops. and in pasture class, The irrigated lands have been <br />mapped only with respect to location. extent, and use, <br /> <br />Recent field reviews of the basin lands indicate that the shallow <br />top soil and rocky soil that exist in some areas may be more restrictive <br />than indicated by the reconnaissance surveys, A detailed land classifi- <br />cation survey would be part of the first work undertaken in future in- <br />vestigations in order that the arable area may be more definitely <br />delineated, <br /> <br />10 <br />
