Kowski, Director
National Park Service
Southwest Region
Post Office Box 728
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501

Dear Mr. Kowski:

In response to your invitation, we are pleased
to submit the following comments on behalf of the State
of Colorado in connection with the study regarding possible
wilderness designation in the Mesa Verde National Park.

In the wilderness study dated September, 1970,
by the National Park Service the conclusion was reached
that wilderness designation was not compatible with the
uses and purposes of the Mesa Verde National Park. The
State of Colorado does not take issue with this conclusion
but does recommend that the park be administered in ac-
cordance with the master plan and that a minimum of add i-
tional development take place. We also believe that the
road less study areas should be maintuined and protected as if
they were classified as wilderness.

We appreciate the opportunity to submit these
comments and request that they be made a part of the
hearing record.

JAL:Teu

1f~~

33

GPO 844 - 4.,5
