Ou;~131

School Section Canyon drainage plus a large portion of Park Mesa.
Dense scrub oak thickets cover the northerly part of this area,
limiting archeological research; consequently, many sites have yet
to be investigated and recorded.

Area 3: This drawn.out, irregularly shaped area of 6000 acres
encompasses the upper portions of Moccasin and Morfield
Canyons. Some Indian ruins are found here.

Area 4: The East Rim roadless area lies along the east boundary
of the park. Within this 6600'acre area are a number of
archeological sites. The rough terrain falls off to the east into
Mancos Canyon. Portions of the private inholdings along the
Mancos River lie within this road less area.

~

Area 5: This road less area, a strip of 6500 acres, stretches
between the main park road and the north park boundary. An
aqueduct. and power and telephone lines cross the area in several
places. Very little research has been done in this part of the park;
however, a few Indian ruins have been found.

~

Roadless Area Use: Unescorted trips by park VIS' tors to isolated
ru ins are restricted as a means of preserving unexcavated sites from
"pot hunting" and indiscriminate digging. As visitation increases,
howev~r, it may become necessary to patrol the management roads
by motor vehicle for additional protection of these sites.

Archeological research, stabilization, and salvage projects are
continuing within the road less areas. Mechanical equipment is
frequently required for these important programs and for the
maintenance of stabilized sites. To add further to the visitor's
understanding and enjoyment of the park, an attempt may be
made to re.create a prehistoric agricultural environment. This may
involve investigating early farming methods and undertaking a
vegetation control plan,

19
