<br />GuJ12~ <br /> <br />CONCLUSIONS <br /> <br />,1 <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />As required by the Wilderness Act, public hearings were held on <br />the preliminary Mesa Verde Wilderness Study at Cortez. Colorado, <br />on December 16. 1970. Notice of the hearings appeared in the <br />Federal Register on October 7, 1970, and in two local Cortez <br />papers on October 29, 1970, About 94 persons attended the <br />hearing, and 22 oral statements were presented. <br /> <br />Of the 22 oral statements made at the hearing, seven supported the <br />Service's proposal for non-wilderness. Fifteen statements were <br />made in favor of wilderness at Mesa Verde_ <br /> <br />Of the agencies, private organizations, and individuals testifying or <br />submitting written views, four of the 14 public agencies. 12 of the <br />27 organizations, and 233 of the 347 individuals supported the <br /> <br />13 <br />
