5432

MEMORANDUM

)

TO: Peter Binney, John Hendrick
FROM: Jim McCord, Hydrosphere
SUBJECT: S. Metro Water Supply Study Regional Groundwater Model Requirements
DA TE: Jan. 8, 200 I

This memorandum presents the draft model requirements as derived from infonnation provided
by the South Metro Water Supply Study Board ("the Study Board"). This infonnation includes:
(a) Study Board background written materials (e.g., the 12/1/99 SMWWS Scope of Work and the
7/19/2000 SMWSS Regional GW Model RFP), (b) the oral feedback obtained at the 11/17/2000
Study Board Peer Review meeting, and (c) responses to an explicit requirements query sent by
Hydrosphere to selected Study Board members I by Peter Binney and Jim McCord on
11/27/2000.

We begin with a summary of modeling objectives, systems to be modeled, and critical modeling
issues. We then present an overview of our proposed model development approach.

\
),

1. MODEL OBJECTIVES
The overall purpose of the S. Metro Water Supply Study is to "to provide a framework to define
and evaluate one or more water supply strategies that meet the near- and long-tenn water needs
of Authority members participating in the study."

This memo describes a groundwater model that is being developed to support Study Board
activities. The objective of the groundwater model is to illustrate likely responses by the
Denver Basin bedrock aquifer system (Dawson, Denver, Arapahoe, and Laramie-Fox Hills
aquifers) to pumping stresses so water managers can evaluate effective long tenn strategies and
programs.

The Study Board desires a regional groundwater flow model that will help address questions in
several key areas, including:

I) Regional and local (well and well field) head drawdown rates in Denver Basin
aquifers over the next 100 years,

I John Hendrick!
