THE SOLUTION

The USDA Patterson Hollow HUA Proj-
ect began in 1990. Its goal was to reduce salts,
nutrients, and pesticides reaching the Arkansas
River by improving irrigation practices and
thus cleaning up return flows to the river. The
HUA brought $1,089,083 in cost-share money
to the area. This stimulated $3.5 million in
construction.
Associated programs that assisted in wa-
ter quality improvement were:

. The Water Quality Incentive Program (WQIP)
cost-shared with producers to improve man-
agement techniques in growing crops. These
included changing to irrigation water man-
agement, using crop residues, and hiring
crop scouts to advise when and what to do
about insect pests. Cost-sharing for these
management practices was $295,800.

. The Holbrook Canal Special Project
brought $190,000 of additional cost-share
. dollars to improve irrigation practices. Five
)+undred thousand dollars worth of improve-
P1lfnts resulted from this assistance.

..rhqNatural Resources Conservation Service
targeted $200,000 in Great Plains Conserva-
ti~K Program cost-shared~pa~sf9~.. struc-
.turillllnd managementill)~r9.Y~\1l~Pt~ltlE~e
., ..Nell'. By using new tech-
nology, irrigators in the Patterson Hollow
HUA helped make the project a success with
measured reduction in return pollutants.

< :>_..,:~~<~::'i.A
~";>~\ ~.:;1,::~\1;r;}j

"",,'-.,-",'
>L>:::/',; :-_::;:~::-:_\'- ,- -. - , ;,
-;'.:,'( :":~;_::' ',- \ .
