no' """If'''
J ~,--Ol'

.

.

~

This water conservation effort means fuat by fell, Cl'OpS grossing around
G100,OOO~000 will be taken from more than two million acres of land under irrigated
cultivation in the State. On the Boise project alone, 350,000 acres of land are
expected to bring in another ;;25,000,000 harvest. In the last 45 years, crops from
the Boise project have brot~ht in more than hal~ a billion dollars. Compare this

with the total expenditure of ~71,000,OCO for this project.

Just to give you an idea of the contribution these projects make to our

national economy, let me quote a few tax :igtlI'es. None of us like taxes, but

nevertheless they reflect the state of business" If the ~:ow of taxes fram an area

remains high, you can figure that business is good.

Federal taxes attributable to the Boise project, both individual income and
corporation. totalled C15,850,OOO in 1952 alone, The total up through 1952 was
:jI14,480,OOO. In the same period of time, water users organizations on the various
divisions of the project had returned 01I,036,626. and power revenues had brought in
J3,712,589 toward the amortization of the Federal investment~

You may also be inte~ested to know that in a survey of retail sales on recla-

mation proj acts wbich was made in 1952, the Boise proj ect sholJed a per capita

f "
average 0 ,,,.1,244.

This is about 20 percent ahead of the national average in per

capita retail sales in that year.

Is it any wonder then that you are interested in additional irrigation develop-

ment. We have similar results from other reclamation projects allover the West.

we know that the President and the Congress are both generally aware of these bene-

fits. That is why we are confident the Reclamation program is going ahead despite

a few detractors who cite only the tax dollars going into these investments, and

refuse to recognize the dividends flowing from them.

6
