Ci:!
-
co
-

CHAPTER V

ALTERNATIVES STUDIED

This chapter includes discussion of three development plans includ-
ing irrigation service that were studied in some detail but found to be
unjustified economically under present economic conditions. These are
plans for the alternative Ohio Creek Unit, the Tomichi Creek Unit, and
the Cochetopa Creek Unit. The chapter also discusses various alterna-
ti ve reservoir sites and canal alignments.

Alternative Ohio Creek Unit

Unit plan

The alternative Ohio Creek Unit would be located along Ohio Creek
and along the Gunnison River between Almont and the city of Gunnison.
The unit would make available the flows of the Gunnison River and Ohio
Creek for municipal and domestic purposes and irrigation. The unit would
develop an average of 11,900 acre-feet of water annually at diversion
points, including about 6,000 acre-feet for municipal and domestic use to
meet requirements for the city of Gunnison and adjacent rural areas and
5,900 acre-feet for irrigation. Irrigation service would be provided to
6,070 acres of supplemental service land and 100 acres of full service
land.

Water would be provided from storage in the existing Taylor Park
Reservoir on Taylor River, a tributary of the Gunnison River, diversions
of direct flow from Ohio Creek made available by exchange, and reuse of
return flows. The storage water from Taylor Park Reservoir would be ob-
tained through agreements with the Uncompahgre Project Water Users' Asso-
ciation, which currently operates the reservoir.

Water from Taylor Park Reservoir would be released to the Taylor
River. Supplies for municipal, domestic, and irrigation use would be di-
verted into the Paragon Canal, which would head on the Gunnison River
about 22 miles below the reservoir. Approximately 1.4 miles from the ca-
nal head the municipal and domestic supplies would be diverted into the
potential Gunnison Pipeline for conveyance to the city of Gunnison and to
intermediate delivery points. The irrigation supplies would continue in
the canal to existing ditches serving lands along lower Ohio Creek. Some
water presently used on lands below the Paragon Canal would be provided
with storage releases from Taylor Park Reservoir and in exchange natural
flow presently used on these landS would be transferred to lands above
the canal on Ohio Creek. Some of the water used on the higher lands
would return to Ohio Creek and would be rediverted to the lower lands.

33

I
